Sean is senior partner of Gates and Partners, a law firm specialising in the aviation sector. His particular speciality is in defending airlines and their insurers in complex litigation, as well as handling claims including the management of major disasters.
At conferences and seminars organised by various groups including IATA, the Royal Aeronautical Society, the International Union of Aviation Insurers, the American Bar Association, and the International Bar Association, Sean is a frequent speaker on numerous air law subjects. He regularly writes articles for legal and industry journals on air law specialisations.
Sean is legal adviser to the International Union of Aviation Insurers (IUAI) for which he acts as representative at the Rome Convention for Surface Damage. Currently, he is the international director of the Aviation Insurance Association.
Among Sean’s many industry accolades, the Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession has ranked Sean in the number one “leading individual” category for aviation insurance and litigation in every edition from 1996 to the present. In the Who’s Who Legal Awards, Sean was named the global Aviation Lawyer of the Year for 2006 and 2005; and Euromoney’s Best of the Best 2005 also identified him as the world’s number one aviation lawyer.
